Leyland Kirby has a penchant for large-scale releases, as evidenced by his massive song collection The Death of Rave (which is finally getting a physical release this month). Now, the man of many names — including V/Vm, the Caretaker, the Stranger and more — has unveiled a new ambitious project called We Drink to Forget the Coming Storm.
Today (May 8) is the soundshaper's 40th birthday, which presumably explains why this album is 40 songs long. It stretches over more than three hours, with the arrangements dominated by quiet background synth strings and soft piano leads. Each song is given a chronological number rather a proper title.
The album will be available for free for 40 days and nights, although there is an option to donate if you wish. It was made earlier this year in Krakow, Poland.
An announcement about the album explains, "A reflection of a time passing, a glimpse back into my own past, a look forward into the forthcoming abyss. Recorded through the darkest night hours during periods of disillusionment. There were no second takes, so we enjoy the errors and misadventures."
