Lemon Bucket Orkestra

'Moorka' (album stream)

BY Sarah MurphyPublished Mar 16, 2015

Pioneers of "Balkan-klezmer-gypsy-party-punk," the Lemon Bucket Orkestra are set to unveil their latest record Moorka, and Exclaim! has got you covered with an advanced listen.

The Toronto-based collective recorded the new material in a barn in Waterloo, ON, back in September, with the final mixing and mastering taken care of by Howie Beck and Joao Carvalho, respectively.

Members of the band recently travelled to the eastern front of the war in Ukraine, which proved to be a prominent influence on the new material. According to a press release, the Lemon Bucket Orkestra "were able to use their music as catharsis, support, and as a platform for storytelling and information-sharing in a political arena obfuscated by propaganda and misinformation."

Despite a gruelling Canadian tour and complicated emotions about the conflict in the Ukraine, the band managed to pull together and complete Moorka.

"We're very proud of what came out of that experience," said vocalist and violinist Mark Marcyk in a statement. "An album that embodies our travels across eastern Europe and Canada driven by the whole range of emotions we were fighting with, embracing, and publicly expressing along the way."

Sounding unlike anything else out there, the new album combines traditional musical styles with a raucous energy, bringing deep-rooted culture from afar into a modern, Canadian setting.

Moorka officially arrives on March 24. You can see the band's upcoming tour dates listed below, and scroll past those to listen to the new record in the player at the bottom of the page.
