L.A. Foster

'Saudade' (album stream)

BY Sarah MurphyPublished Nov 27, 2015

Over the past 10 years, Lesley Ann Foster has been making music out of Buenos Aires, then Montreal, and she's ready to drop her debut EP as L.A. Foster. Before its official release, Exclaim! is giving you an early listen to Saudade in its entirety.

Bringing together an eclectic combination of cumbia, reggaeton and house music, the new songs are held together with Foster's unique use of samples, hooks and soulful vocals. Across the four songs, the musician toys with her geographical influences, delivering emotional material that covers everything from "southern heat" to "gritty cold-weather breakups."

The set of songs also marks the debut of Young Galaxy's Stephen Ramsey as a producer. And while Saudade marks a new beginning in many ways, the EP also serves as Foster's farewell to the city of Montreal. She will be performing at L'Emerald in Montreal on November 28, and those in attendance will get a postcard "sent from wherever she is in the world" at a later date. It will include a download code for the new EP.

"Montreal has been my home and playground to experiment with life's successes and failures, it has a cold grip on me and always will," Foster said in a statement. "In my 10 years here, I have partied, loved, lost, studied, worked, failed and ultimately succeeded, all that leading me to create L.A. Foster. It's now time for me to move on and in hopes of returning and show the city how I've grown from all the real love and wisdom it's imparted on me."

For those who don't want to wait for the snail mail to arrive, you can give Saudade a digital spin in the player below. It's officially out tomorrow (November 28).
