Kevin Hearn Gets Lou Reed, Ron Sexsmith, Dan Hill for 'Days in Frames' LP, Shares New Single

Known best for his work as a member of the Barenaked Ladies and the Rheostatics, Canadian music man Kevin Hearn has announced plans for his seventh solo LP. Days in Frames will arrive on November 25 through Roaring Girl Records/Fontana North.

Mixing melodic, piano-driven pop with synths and ukuleles, the new collection of songs is simple and down-to-earth, yet unafraid to explore otherworldly sounds. According to a press release, Hearn describes the themes on the album as "love, loss, life, death and renewal, with brief glimpses of the supernatural and the occasional darkly humorous observation."

No stranger to surrounding himself with talented musicians, Hearn nabbed an impressive roster of guests for the new record. Days in Frames was produced by Gavin Brown (Metric, Tragically Hip, Sarah Harmer) and features cameos from Ron Sexmith, Dan Hill, Rob Kloet (the Nits), Joan as Policewoman and his Rheostatics bandmate Don Kerr.

Most notably, perhaps, "Floating" features a guitar part from the late Lou Reed. Written about the time Hearn spent visiting Reed in the hospital, the track also gets contributions from Reed's bandmates Fernando Saunders, Tony "Thunder" Smith, Mike Rathke and Aram Bajakian. Hearn was the keyboardist and musical director for Reed from 2007 until the Velvet Underground hero's death last year.

The new LP was written across the country, from Hearn's Toronto home to Muskoka, ON, and from Tofino, BC, to Cape Dorset up on Baffin Island. "Midnight Sun" is dedicated to Inuit artist Shuvinai Ashoona, who painted a guitar for Hearn. Art also played a role in inspiring the infectious yet soft-sounding, dream-inducing lead single "Gallerina," which tells the story of a painting that becomes infatuated with a gallery worker.

In conjunction with the album's release, Hearn will play a show at Toronto's the Piston on November 26. The full tracklisting for Days in Frames is below, and you can scroll through it to hear the aforementioned "Gallerina."
