Kathleen Hanna Forced to Cancel Julie Ruin Tour over Lyme Disease Relapse

BY Gregory AdamsPublished May 13, 2014

Kathleen Hanna's ongoing battle with Lyme disease has forced the punk icon to cancel a series of upcoming performances with her group the Julie Ruin. Sadly, this means the Sled Island guest curator will not be making it to Calgary next month.

The news of the singer's relapse was delivered in a press release, which confirms that Hanna "has been advised by her doctor to start a difficult three-month course of treatment immediately." The treatment plan will prevent the performer from travelling.

The affected dates include a trip to Europe that was to start on Saturday (May 17), the band's Canadian appearances at Sled Island next month and in Vancouver this July, additional North American dates, and a second European trip in August. The group reports, however, that they expect Hanna to recover and that the shows will be rescheduled.

Hanna has been vocal about her battle with Lyme disease, having revealed the affliction in The Punk Singer. In the film, she is seen going to doctors, who explain that she has late-stage Lyme disease, a bacterial infection spread by tick bites that can affect the nervous system. Symptoms of the disease include abnormal muscle movement, weakness, numbness and speech-related problems.
