The MTV VMAs took place tonight (August 30), and one of its central moments was the Video Vanguard Award, which was presented to Kanye West by Taylor Swift. As could be expected, there were plenty of references to their previous VMAs kerfuffle. More importantly, however, Kanye offered an impassioned speech where he announced his plan to run for president.
After a minutes-long moment of silence where he basked in the roar of his fans, Yeezus took them all to church with a long, impassioned speech about artistry, opinion and the media. He also made sure to put MTV on blast for pitting artists against each other.
Finally, he closed out his speech by saying, "I have decided in 2020 to run for president." Then he dropped the mic.
Whether or not he follows up on his promise is yet to be seen. Here's hoping he at least drops SWISH first.
