Love Is a Stream, the last widely released full-length album from ambient sound sculptor Jefre Cantu-Ledesma, was released way back in 2010, when it made our list of underappreciated albums that year. But the American audio artist has hardly been lazing around since, instead releasing a barrage of rare EPs and other projects under his own name, as well as with various other projects. Years later, however, the artist is finally ready to put his name on another official LP.
The album is called A Year With 13 Moons and marks Cantu-Ledesma's first official work for Mexican Summer. The record is composed of 16 tracks and is described as a companion to Love Is a Stream. It was recorded at the Headlands Center for the Arts outside of San Francisco (the artist's longtime home city, though he's recently relocated to Brooklyn).
The album's title is a reference to Rainer Werner Fassbinder's 1978 film In a Year with 13 Moons. In addition to the German auteur, filmmakers Alain Resnais, Chantal Akerman and Chris Marker are also listed as influences on the album.
"Their use of personal and collective memory as a narrative was a big influence on the editing of the LP, and Marker in particular showed me that seemingly desperate elements (i.e., pop-like structures and melodies vs noise) can cohesively form a whole," Cantu-Ledesma said in a statement.
Mexican Summer will issue A Year With 13 Moons on February 10. In the meantime, the album's "Pale Flower" can be streamed below.
