Jack White's Blunderbuss may have come out today (April 24), but there's more big news for the former White Stripes member this week, as it's been revealed he will be scoring the upcoming Disney Pictures blockbuster The Lone Ranger.
Variety reports that director Gore Verbinski has tapped the eccentric songsmith to score the film, an updated cinematic feature about the heroic masked ranger that fought injustice in the Old West with Tonto by his side. Filming for The Lone Ranger is currently taking place in New Mexico, with the flick expected to hit theatres May 13, 2013.
"Jack's an amazing songwriter with a unique style," producer Jerry Bruckheimer said of the decision. "We're thrilled to hear his fresh take on [Gioachino Rossini's] 'William Tell Overture.'" The classical piece, of course, has become known as the Lone Ranger's theme song.
The film features actor Armie Hammer (The Social Network) in the role of the Ranger, while the sidekick will be played by Johnny Depp, who apparently has high hopes for White's work.
"Gore hatched the idea and Johnny was thrilled with it," Bruckheimer tells Variety. "We're all very excited to have him on board."
While White previously contributed music to the 2008 James Bond film Quantum of Solace and 2003′s Cold Mountain, this will be the first full film score from the musician.
