In-Flight Safety Return with 'Conversationalist'

BY Alex HudsonPublished Jun 27, 2014

Last spring, Halifax indie rock act In-Flight Safety promised that the follow-up to 2009's We Are an Empire, My Dear was on its way. We haven't heard much from them in the year-plus since then, but now they've finally announced Conversationalist, which will be out on September 9 through Night Danger/Fontana North.

An announcement explains that the band have been quiet in recent years as singer-guitarist John Mullane focused on film scores and drummer Glen Nicholson studied architecture at school.

They eventually reconvened for this album, which was mixed by Werner F. and Gus Van Go (Said the Whale, Rah Rah, the Stills, Hollerado). Mullane said in a statement, "The word conversation came up a lot while working on the record. Metaphorically the conversation is a tool, which helps in constructing something meaningful. There's a simple beauty in a conversation. I give, you take, you give and we repeat. Glen and I undertook hundreds, if not thousands, of conversations in person, by text, phone, and email in order to make something that felt both new and honest. Music is a conversation. It's not finished until someone listens."

A press release describes the record further as "a love letter and a breakup in one album."

At the bottom of the page, hear the atmospherically chiming pop-rock crooner "Blue Flares." The previously shared "Destroy" is also below.

Also check out the band's tour schedule after the tracklist. It includes a number of shows in Canada's eastern half in September.
