The Horrible Crowes

Elsie

Led by Brian Fallon (the frontman for the Gaslight Anthem) and good friend Ian Perkins, the Horrible Crowes' debut album takes a more soulful approach when compared to Fallon's day job. The 12-song record relies on Fallon's soaring voice, heart-breaking melodies and open spaces for big chords, intricate instrumentation and background vocals to ring through. Of course, Fallon's voice makes it very easy to label this album "a toned down version of Gaslight," and when listening to the more upbeat tracks ("Behold the Hurricane," "Go Tell Everybody") that description isn't too far off. But those moments are the exception. Songs such as "Cherry Blossoms" and "I Believe Jesus Brought Us Together" tap into an introspective, cinematic side that Gaslight rarely touch. Elsie is a strong debut that continually peaks, reaching its climax on "Crush," with very few moments of letdown.
