Hilotrons Return with New Album: 'At Least There's Commotion'

BY Alex HudsonPublished Oct 19, 2012

It's been more than four years since we branded Ottawa's Hilotrons "geniuses" for 2008's Happymatic, and now the Mike Dubue-led pop rock project have finally unveiled the follow-up. Entitled At Least There's Commotion, the record will arrive on February 5 via Kelp Records.

The sessions saw Dubue working closely with drummer/engineer Philip Shaw Bova at Ottawa's Bova Sound studio. Also contributing the recordings were Snailhouse's Michael Feuerstack, Jeremy Fisher and Jim Bryson (although Bryson's contribution ended up being a bonus track, "Shouldice Road").

According to the press release, these 11 tracks reportedly fuse Hilotrons' usual influences — Talking Heads, Devo, Talk Talk — with Peter Gabriel, Kate Bush and TV composer Mike Post.

"Commotion is also the most raw and personal album we've seen from Hilotrons," the PR explains. "The album's storyline weaves from heartbreak to reconciliation, through the eyes of those who suffer from personality disorders, as well as their friends and lovers."

Stream or download the Fisher-featuring pop number "Runaway Heart" over at SoundCloud for a taste of the album's quirky sound. At the bottom of the page are live performances of that single and "Not There Tonight," which were filmed by Southern Souls.

Hilotrons will perform at Wakefield, QC's Black Sheep Inn this Saturday (October 20). This will apparently be the band's final show with their original lineup. After that, Dubue will present his radio play Eschatos for the Ottawa Writer's Festival at Knox Presbyterian Church on October 30. At 10 p.m. that same night, Dubue will perform Hilotrons songs at the Arc Hotel alongside cellist Octavie Dostaler-Lalonde.
