Psychedelic Montreal unit the High Dials recently returned with their latest LP In the AM Wilds, and now Exclaim! happy to share the video premiere of "The Barroom Fisher King."
The short, simplistic clip features falling snow and tree branches brightened by a distant light source. The fuzzy shot gradually comes into focus as the brief instrumental song progresses, finally revealing a streetlamp and a row of snow-covered houses.
In a statement about the new video, frontman Trevor Anderson explains:
Olivier Theriault is the director of this video. He chose one of the instrumental interludes from our new record. We loved the minimalism, and the homage to Montreal at night — heavy snow, the dull glow of streetlights, balconville. Kind of reminds me of photos by Brassai of Paris at night — those photos really inspired the album artwork and even the lyrics. The shifting focus is a nice play on the album lyrics too, the way perception changes on an alcoholic adventure in our town.
The slow focus was timed to coincide with the music but then a mysterious figure turns on the lights of their room exactly as the music changes, unplanned and on cue. Eerie.
Despite a clock-in time of barely over a minute, it's nevertheless a whimsical, wintery clip that's worth cozying up somewhere warm to watch.
