Ex-Hefner frontman Darren Hayman has been working on a trilogy of albums about his home county of Essex in England, and he will drop the final instalment this fall. His album The Violence will arrive on November 5 in the UK via Fortuna POP!
The album's 20 songs address the county's witch trials during the English Civil War of the 17th century, when hundreds of women were killed for supposed witchcraft.
To whet our appetite, Hayman has unveiled the mournful folk dirge "We Are Not Evil." In a statement, the songwriter said, "Evil never thinks of itself as such, and people can act cruelly when frightened. I assume that Matthew Hopkins, the self-named 'Witchfinder General,' believed, on some level, that he was acting on God's instruction."
The new track "Vinegar Tom" is also below.
An announcement describes The Violence as "epic in both concept and sound. The landscape of the Dedham Vale is bought alive by beautiful intricate woodwind scores, trembling strings and destroyed church organs." It is credited to Darren Hayman and the Long Parliament.
On Twitter, Hayman revealed that it will be released as a double LP or single CD with a runtime of around 76 minutes. "Both packages are lavish," he promised.
The Violence follows Hayman's previous Essex-themed albums Pram Town (2009) and Essex Arms (2010).
