Let this be a cautionary tale for all the hackers out there: leaking an album from a big-name artist doesn't come without consequences. The man responsible for leaking tracks from Madonna's Rebel Heart months in advance of the album release has now been sentences to 14 months in prison.
Israeli hacker Adi Lederman was arrested back in January, about a month after the tracks emerged online. Appearing in court in Tel Aviv, the 39-year-old confessed to computer trespassing, and infringement of privacy and property rights.
The court said in a statement, "The ease with which crimes such as this can be committed by those who have skills in the field, such as the accused, require an appropriate punitive response that has a deterrent and uncompromising message."
Lederman was also fined about $5,030 CAD. Despite the severity of his punishment, it isn't as harsh as it could have been; he had been facing as much as five years behind bars.
Interestingly, Lederman has a musical past of his own. A few years ago, he appeared on an Israeli show called Kokhav Nolad (A Star Is Born), which is a talent contest akin to American Idol.
