Green Day have already shown a flair for the theatrical, as their 2004 rock opera American Idiot spawned its own Broadway musical. Now, frontman Billie Joe Armstrong has taken on a starring role in a new music drama film called Geezer.

Variety reports that Armstrong will appear alongside Fred Armisen, Judy Greer, Selma Blair, Dallas Roberts, Chris Messina and Brian Baumgartner. The film centres on a former punk rocker in the throes of a midlife crisis, who throws a party for his 40th birthday. At the party, the star — who is now a husband and father — meets his beautiful ex-girlfriend and successful former bandmates.

It's unclear at this point if Armstrong is that birthday-celebrating punk or starring in another role.

Excitingly for fans, though, the film will include some new songs from Armstrong, Variety reports. There's no indication that his Green Day bandmates will be involved at all, so these may well be billed as solo tunes.

The flick is being directed by Lee Kirk, who said, "The initial seeds for Geezer were planted a couple of years ago, when my son was born within weeks of my 40th birthday. Billie Joe Armstrong brings an exciting authenticity to the film. He's a dad, he's a musician and he's an incredible talent."

Shooting is apparently taking place in New York City. There's no word as to exactly when Geezer is expected out.

This role shouldn't be too much of a leap for Armstrong. After all, he has joined the cast of the American Idiot musical on occasion, performing the role of St. Jimmy.
