Glen Hansard Pays Tribute to Songs: Ohia on Covers EP

Swell Season singer Glen Hansard has revealed his next project will pay tribute to the late Jason Molina, bringing together former members of Songs: Ohia for an EP called It Was Triumph We Once Proposed…Songs of Jason Molina.

The five-song collection arrives March 17 through Overcoat Recordings, with Hansard bringing aboard Molina collaborators Jeff Panall, Jennie Benford, Dan Sullivan and Rob Sullivan to reinterpret selections from the Songs: Ohia back catalogue. This includes The Lioness's "Being in Love," Magnolia Electric Co.'s "Hold On, Magnolia" and "Farewell Transmission," and "White Sulfur" and "Vanquisher" from Songs: Ohia's 1997 debut LP.

Hansard was a longtime friend of Molina's, explaining that their relationship started off with a fan letter but blossomed into something bigger. The pair issued a split 7-inch together in 2000, with Molina, Panall and the Sullivans performing on Hansard's "A Caution to the Birds."

"Jason Molina was a hero and a friend," Hansard said in a statement. "I wrote him my first fan letter, I always loved his music and singing these songs is the only way to make sense of losing him."

You'll find Hansard's interpretation of "Being in Love" beneath It Was Triumph We Once Proposed…Songs of Jason Molina's tracklisting.
