Toronto based hardcore punks Fucked Up have an uncanny ability to combine relentless positivity with cheerful violence, and as fans have come to expect, they pulled out all the stops for this appearance. Despite playing to a surprisingly sparse crowd (most people elected to migrate to one of the larger stages to see Lamb of God and await Slayer) and having to perform a second set at the Heavy Montreal afterparty later that evening at Katacombes, there was never a moment's indication that they gave the performance anything but their all.

Not content to remain on stage, frontman Damian Abraham hopped over the fence and performed the second half of the set from the middle of the pit, hugging fans and even picking up one gentleman and spinning him around on his shoulders. When a plastic beer cup was smashed onto his forehead, it stayed there, creepily stuck to his skin. There is a rare joy in their mayhem that makes Fucked Up a pleasure to watch every time they play.
