Foxygen Spinoff Diane Coffee Preps 'My Friend Fish' LP

BY Alex HudsonPublished Aug 8, 2013

Just as Foxygen songwriter Jonathan Rado has a solo album coming out this year, drummer Shaun Fleming has a record coming out under the name Diane Coffee. My Friend Fish is due out on October 29 through Western Vinyl.

The album was written after Fleming relocated to New York from California and fell ill. A press release explains, "As he recovered, cabin fever supplanted the flu, and his relentless creative drive took over. Low on funds and bored out of his mind, he spent the next two weeks alone in his bedroom writing and recording what would become the debut Diane Coffee LP My Friend Fish."

The album was created using rudimentary tools like an incomplete drum kit (including a metal pot), a detuned guitar rather than a bass, and the voice recorder from an iPhone. Nevertheless, the results are said to be "fully realized and remarkably polished," with stylistic touchstones including Donovan and Tom Jones.

The tracklist is below. Scroll past that to stream the organ-soaked waltz "Hymn." Diane Coffee's upcoming tour schedule is also below.
