Former Isis Frontman Teams Up with Baptists and Russian Circles Members as Sumac

Aaron Turner already has his supergroup punch card filled by being a part of Old Man Gloom, but the metal vet has announced he's now teamed up with members of Baptists and Russian Circles in a new band called Sumac.

The former Isis leader unveiled the project on his blog yesterday (September 3), explaining that the core membership of the group consists of him and Baptists skin-basher Nick Yacyshyn. It's further explained that Russian Circles/Botch bassist Brian Cook laid down the low-end on the group's upcoming debut LP, The Deal, with Turner hoping Cook will act "as an auxiliary/intermittent member for live performances when possible."

Turner also added that despite Sumac's membership being attached to other high-profile bands, the offshoot isn't being treated as a side-project. The musician explained: "We are pursuing this as a fully functional band rather than side project, with plans to play live in the coming year and continue with further writing/recording thereafter."

As for the band's six-song LP, it'll be issued this coming February through Profound Lore/SIGE Records. The album was tracked with Mell Dettmer (Sunn O)))) at the Litho and Aleph studios in Seattle, with mastering duties handled by Kurt Ballou (Converge, Baptists) at his GodCity facility in Salem, MA.

Audio samples have yet to arrive, but three of the tracks crack the 10-minute mark and only one song ("Spectral Gold") weighs in under five minutes long. You'll find the tracklisting down below.

As previously reported, Turner's Old Man Gloom recently announced they have a new album named Ape of God in the works for a future release on Profound Lore. In more immediate news, Vancouverite Yacyshyn is bracing himself for the release of Baptists' upcoming sophomore LP, Bloodmines, which arrives October 13 through Southern Lord.

The Deal:

1. Spectral Gold

2. Thorn in the Lion's Paw

3. Hollow King

4. Blight's End Angel
5. The Deal

6. Radiance of Being
