In the continuing saga between Bloc Partys Kele Okereke and Sex Pistols John Lydon, the tour manager for British post-punkers Foals revealed three members of the Oxford outfit suffered injuries in the "racist attack.
Tour Manager Nick Jenkin recently called Lydons version of the story where the Pistols singer describe the incident as a "perfect evening "totally untrue, telling the Times Online, he watched Okereke being punched by the Sex Pistols entourage while Lydon taunted the Kaiser Chiefs Ricky Wilson after the singer went to the aid of the Bloc Party singer.
Jenkin also said Foals front-man Yannis Philippakis tried to help Okereke but was put in a sleeper hold by a Spanish security guard until Philippakis passed out. The Foals singer was then handcuffed as he lay on the ground while the guard "had a boot on his back, Jenkin said.
In the incident, Jenkin said Foals bassist Walter Gervers came out with a black eye and guitarist Jimmy Smith was shoved through a barrier during the scuffle on Saturday (July 19) at Barcelonas Summercase festival.
The brawl broke out after Okereke approached Lydon about the possibility of a Public Image Ltd. reunion (Lydons post-Pistols project), where the aging punker became "intimidating and aggressive while his entourage responded with a racist tirade, including the statement, your problem is your black attitude,'" Okereke said in a statement released earlier this week.
"Kele looked in pretty bad shape. The Sex Pistols were in everyones face, obviously looking for violence, Jenkin said.
As we reported earlier this week, Super Furry Animals singer and one-half of the Mercury Prize-nominated Neon Neon, Gruff Rhys also backed Okerekes version of the event, saying the brawl was "horrific and that "statements Kele has said are absolutely true.
"Bloc Party, Foals, Kaiser Chiefs, the Raveonettes, and Mogwai were in our trailer, the Sex Pistols were a couple of trailers away, Rhys recently told . "We were going one by one to meet them and get photos. The security got in before we could help Kele. Lydon said the younger bands were jealous, but we went to him in admiration, not jealousy. He showed his true colours, the hero turned out to be a bigot arsehole."
