Fleshgod Apocalypse lay it on pretty thick. Decked out in their signature ragged suits and corpse paint, the Italian death metal band topped off FME's metal night at the Petit Théâtre with a pummelling spectacle of doom and despair. Fans ate up the theatrics and the violence of their performance, but interest in the bar was noticeably increased during the pretty parts.
People want something very specific when they turn out to see a death metal band with Apocalypse in its name, and Fleshgod were there to serve. Pauses between songs begat seas of horns and demanding chants for more ("Fleshgod! Fleshgod!"), but they still made time to breathe, with frontman Tommaso Riccardi toasting the crowd with wine and reading cantos from Dante's Inferno about pursuing knowledge and not being animals.
All things considered, it's a little much to take seriously; this was strictly for the darkest of souls.
