Doug Paisley

'Strong Feelings' (album stream)

BY Alex HudsonPublished Jan 14, 2014

Next week, Canadian alt-country singer-songwriter Doug Paisley will release his first album since 2010's Constant Companion. Before Strong Feelings drops on January 21 via No Quarter Records/Warner Music Canada, though, the entire album is available to stream here on Exclaim.ca.

The record was produced by Stew Crookes (Hawksley Workman, One Hundred Dollars, Fiver). Recording took place at Noble Street Studio in Toronto and at the National Arts Centre in Ottawa. Guests include Afie Jurvanen (a.k.a. Bahamas), Canadian sax virtuoso player Colin Stetson, Garth Hudson of the Band and Bazil Donovan of Blue Rodeo, among others.

Strong Feelings finds Paisley continuing to explore and expand his rootsy sound. Opener "Radio Girl" sports a tasteful mix of acoustic strumming, electric twang and tuneful keys. The rest of the album follows in suit, with "Song My Love Can Sing" featuring whirling organ, "What's Up Is Down" highlighting Mary Margaret O'Hara's vocal harmonies, and "To and Fro" channelling rock'n'roll grit.

Hear the album below and pre-order it on iTunes here.

UPDATE: This stream was available for one week only and is no longer available.
