The Kinder Morgan oil pipeline has been the source of major controversy in British Columbia, and politically-minded punk Joe Keithley is wading into the fray with a D.O.A. protest show in Vancouver.
The gig takes place on January 31 at the Biltmore Cabaret. It's dubbed the "No Kinder Morgan Expansion Benefit Show." D.O.A. are headlining the event, while the Ford Pier Vengeance Trio and Aging Youth Gang are also on the bill. The poster promises "many surprise guests."
Tickets cost $16 in advance and can be purchased online or from a number of local record shops. Alternately, they're $20 at the door. All proceeds go to the legal defence fund for Kinder Morgan protesters, many of whom have been arrested.
"It's outrageous the way Kinder Morgan is trying to bully peaceful protesters, the city of Burnaby and the province of BC. It's up to us, the people, to protect our rights and our democracy. The National Energy Board hearings are looking more and more like a sham with a per-ordained outcome. " Keithley said in a statement. "It's only going to take one spill to destroy our beautiful coast. We're going to be proactive and try and put a stop to this. Transporting bitumen through inland coastal waterways is insane."
The announcement argues that the proposed increase in pipeline capacity will increase Vancouver's tanker traffic. Keithley said that Canada isn't putting enough effort into renewable energy, citing Germany is an example for the widespread use of wind turbines and solar panels.
