Derek Grant

"Waiting for the End of the World"

Alkaline Trio drummer Derek Grant is set to unleash his first solo effort Breakdown next week, but he's shared new track "Waiting for the End of the World" right here on Exclaim.ca to tide you over until then.

As previously reported, the material on the new record hears Grant working through some tough times brought on by a divorce. "My relationship had fallen apart and I was dealing with it in some very unhealthy ways," he previously explained.

"Waiting for the End of the World" addresses the relationship issues head-on. According to Grant, the track is "about reaching a stalemate in a relationship, yet carrying on as if everything is fine." Setting the tone for the LP, it was one of the first songs he wrote for Breakdown.

While the album as a whole boasts an eclectic mix of Americana and new wave influences, this track is particularly rootsy. The electric guitar is given some serious twang and paired with country-esque piano bits, though there's still a definite rock edge to the tune.

Breakdown arrives on January 20 via Red Scare. Give "Waiting for the End of the World" an exclusive first listen in the player below.
