Deerhoof's Greg Saunier and Lightning Bolt's Brian Chippendale Team Up for Drum Duo Album

BY Gregory AdamsPublished Nov 20, 2014

For 20 years now, both Deerhoof's Greg Saunier and Lightning Bolt's Brian Chippendale have blasted out mind-bending beats for their respective bands. Now, the twosome have joined forces for a new improvisational drum LP bringing their skins-hitting styles together for the very first time.

Simply titled Brian Chippendale and Greg Saunier, the limited-edition LP lands December 15 through Famous Class/Death by Audio. According to a press release, the pair performed the two improvisational pieces ("Side A" and "Side B") at Brooklyn's Death by Audio venue in the spring of 2013, with the performances sometimes finding them either "lost in cacophonous bliss" or "egging each other on to snowballing ludicrousness."

The record arrives in a limited-edition run of 500 copies on electric blue vinyl with white splatter, and comes packaged with a download code and video of the entire performance, as well as the documentary Checking in at 20. Produced by Death by Audio Films, the short movie homes in on the careers of both Saunier and Chippendale. You'll find a stream of the doc — which also features interviews with the likes of Flaming Lips' Wayne Coyne, Oneida drummer Kid Millions and Thee Oh Sees' John Dwyer — down below.

You can pre-order the record here.

As previously reported, Saunier's Deerhoof issued their  La Isla Bonita LP earlier in the month, and are currently on a North American tour. The trip hits Vancouver this Saturday (November 22). You'll find the venue and date details for the rest of the trip over here.

Lightning Bolt haven't issued a full-length since their 2012 rarities-collecting set, Oblivion Hunter.
