Deepchord

Hashbar Loops

BY Sarah FergusonPublished Jul 5, 2011

An intelligently constructed collection of tracks from the veteran Detroit, MI sound designer, who has long been releasing music under multiple aliases and various styles, Hash-Bar Loops is crammed with relaxing ambient audio, making for a track-by-track journey of dub techno with classic consistency. Accordingly, Deepchord (aka Rod Modell) hails from Detroit's Eastern-Market area, the location of the infamous "techno boulevard," back when it was also home to Derrick May, Juan Atkins and Kevin Saunderson. Almost 25 years later, the experienced sounds on this hazy, relaxing record linger like slowly dispersing smoke, a suitable image given the record's title, which was created largely throughout the artist's extended visit to Amsterdam. The depth and dreaminess of the Deepchord sound dominate — soothing repetition and consistency reveal beauty in the slow formation of sound.
