Ben Gibbard's voice and synth-pop backing — sound familiar? No, we're not talking about the Postal Service. Rather, Death Cab for Cutie have become the latest guitar band to be reworked for Built to Spill member Brett Nelson's covers series the Electronic Anthology Project.
Previous albums from the project have celebrated Built to Spill and Dinosaur Jr., but this release is a comparatively modest two-song single. Pitchfork notes that it includes covers of "Soul Meets Body" (from 2005's Plans) and "Champagne from a Paper Cup" (from 1998's Something About Airplanes). Gibbard himself will sing the new versions of these tunes.
The single will be released digitally on July 2, with a coloured vinyl 7-inch to follow.
Meanwhile, Nelson is has re-teamed with Doug Martsch for an expanded, remastered vinyl version of The Electronic Anthology Project of Built to Spill. Expect information about that release to arrive in due course.
Speaking of the Postal Service, the reunited duo of Gibbard and Jimmy Tamborello will appear on The Colbert Report on June 19. The band are touring this summer. See their schedule here, but note that the Vancouver show, which was originally scheduled to take place at Rogers Arena, has been moved to the comparatively cozy Queen Elizabeth Theatre.
