The Dears' 2008 album, Missiles, found the baroque pop troupe stripping things to the bare essentials. More precisely, the band whittled themselves down to vocalist Murray Lightburn and his wife, keyboardist/singer Natalia Yanchak, to make the record. Though they toured with a live band, the creative process must have been a little lonely, explaining the full-group dynamic on their upcoming album, Degeneration Street.
It's a heart-warming reunion, of sorts, with many musicians coming back to the fold. According to a press release, the Montreal outfit's fifth proper release "finds Murray Lightburn, Natalia Yanchak, [guitarist] Patrick Krief, [guitarist] Robert Benvie, [bassist] Roberto Arquilla and [drummer] Jeff Luciani creating a sweeping collection of orchestral pop/rock that is at once enlightening, angst-ridden and mesmerizing."
With a sound "ranging from electrifying pop to full-on primal screams; grinding guitar solos to soulful baroque," Degeneration Street promises to be a return to form for the long-running outfit.
A tracklisting has yet to appear, but new single "Omega Dogs" has been leaked to tease the set. You can download the anthem here on the Dears' website or watch a live performance of the cut below.
And while no Canadian dates are currently slated, the band will play NYC's the Knitting Factory on November 3 and 4, showcasing their upcoming release.
Degeneration Street is due out February 15 on Dangerbird Records in the U.S. and on Pheromone Recordings in Canada.
