Dean Wareham

'Luna Demos 1991' (EP stream)

Reunited dream-pop unit Luna recently unveiled plans to put out a box set highlighting their first five albums. Dean Wareham has now released a group of early demo recordings on Bandcamp, with hopes to raise funds to help pay the medical bills of friend and music industry figure Terry Tolkin.

It's explained that the five-song Luna Demos 1991 was recorded shortly after Wareham's Galaxie 500 broke up. Tolkin had signed Wareham as a solo artist to Elektra Records, and the songwriter entered the studio with drummer Jimmy Chambers (Mercury Rev) to lay down some music. The Clean's Hamish Kilgour appears on "I Can't Wait."

Longtime Luna fans, or perhaps someone just paying attention to the release's title, will note that though the songs were recorded by Wareham as a solo artist, the tracks would later appear on Luna's 1992 debut, Lunapark. You can check out these alternate editions down below.

A statement explains that the currently New Orleans-based Tokin "is fighting a rare and aggressive virus that has his doctors perplexed, and facing huge medical bills for hospital visits, thrice-weekly dialysis and prescription drug co-pays." All proceeds will go towards paying said bills.

Luna Demos 1991 can be bought for $7 USD, with the option to donate more. You can pick it up over here.
