De La Soul Announce Record Store Day "Easter Egg Hunt" for 'D.A.I.S.Y. Instrumentals'

With Record Store Day just two sleeps away, hip-hop icons De La Soul have announced they're getting into the spirit by offering up a new 12-inch of J Dilla-prepped instrumentals used on their recent Smell the D.A.I.S.Y. mixtape, with copies hidden Easter egg-style at participating shops.

A press release notes that anyone who submitted their email to grab the BitTorrent Bundle containing the mixtape has been sent a message detailing that 100 vinyl copies of the instrumental set are being hidden in shops in the U.S., Canada and the UK. The email contains clues as to where the rare records will be, as does the group's website. Listed are Yelp pages for a series of U.S. cities, but none in Canada.

As you can see up above, the album cover features a picture of a blank tape, which a press release explains was how the late J Dilla would disseminate beats to groups like A Tribe Called Quest, the Roots, Talib Kweli, Mos Def and De La Soul. The press release notes the art is designed "to bring us back to the pre-digital days of production: a world where the best beats were something earned, tactile and thumbed-over."

"The reason we choose to release an all-instrumental version of Smell The Da.I.S.Y. is to give people the experience of a J Dilla beat tape that we were so lucky to receive," De La's Dave Jolicoeur said in a statement. "These beat tapes were the springboard that generated creation and inspiration for us."

De La Soul will also be holding an eBay auction for signed copies of the 12-inch, with proceeds going to the J Dilla Foundation.
