Following news that David Bowie and Iggy Pop's 1970s collaborations are to be explored in a biopic called Lust for Life, it's been announced that the Thin White Duke will also be treated to a revelatory documentary titled David Bowie — Five Years.
The film is set to premiere on BBC Two this May, and presumably BBC Canada at a later point. NME reports that the flick concentrates on five integral year's of the beloved musician's life: 1971, 1975, 1977, 1980 and 1983. While the years in question will be explored through the use of unseen archival footage and interviews with friends and collaborators, it will also apparently touch on his recently announced comeback.
Director Francis Whately has apparently been working on the film for more than a decade, with the doc taking shape sometime after he and Bowie worked together for a 2001 film for the BBC Omnibus strand.
"This year, 2013, is shaping up to be the year of David Bowie," Whately said in a statement, no doubt referencing Bowie's impending The Next Day LP, "and now is the perfect moment for this feature-length film devoted to this extraordinary artist."
BBC Two controller Janice Hadlow added, "David Bowie — Five Years promises to be a revealing look at the life and career of one of the modern era's most influential and innovative performers."
While an airing date has yet to be set in stone, Bowie's new LP is due out March 12 via Columbia.
