The passing of Ronnie James Dio last May left a giant hole in the heavy metal world that may never be filled. The frontman's powerful work on recordings with Rainbow, Black Sabbath, Heaven & Hell and his own Dio revealed his pipes to be one of the most iconic sounds in rock music's canon. While the man may be gone, his legacy lives on.
Earlier it was reported that some unreleased tracks that Dio had been working on shortly before his death will soon see the light of day. Additionally, it's now been announced by his widow, Wendy, that an all-star cast of hard rockers is getting together to toast the legend.
As Noisecreep reports, Wendy Dio revealed plans for an upcoming tribute, which is said to feature some heavy hitters.
"We have a tribute record, which probably won't come out this year, but everybody signed up," she said. "Even today they were picking songs for which songs they're gonna do."
Some of the notable guests include Foo Fighters front man Dave Grohl, who will take on the classic Sabbath song "Mob Rules," and Judas Priest singer Rob Halford, who will tackle "Long Live Rock 'n' Roll." Motörhead singer Lemmy Kilmister is also scheduled to appear.
"I just talked to Alice [Cooper], roped Alice in and Sebastian [Bach] and Chris [Jericho]," Wendy Dio added. Cooper is reportedly digging deep into Ronnie James Dio's back catalogue with plans to record an Elf song.
With the album still in its formative stage, we can expect more details, from its tracklisting to its title, sometime in the near future.
