Darwin Deez Drops Wonky Mixtape

BY Gregory AdamsPublished Jan 24, 2011

While Darwin Deez' self-titled 2010 debut showcased a love for melodic, Strokes-style tunes, there's more to Brooklyn-based musician than just angular guitar rock. A newly released mixtape, titled Wonky Beats, veers the artist way into left field, trading spiky six string licks for goofball hip-hop.

The sometimes indie-rocker is offering up the collection for free, but not without a little work. You can obtain the Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory-sampling set -- the album is composed entirely out of music from the '70s film -- by posting one of Darwin Deez' music videos on your Facebook page, taking a screenshot of your post and sending it his band's way.

As an added bonus, and to further the Wonka-centric project, five lucky downloaders will receive a golden ticket with their zip of the record. The prize winners will receive a lifetime supply of Darwin Deez music and tickets to their shows whenever they hit your town. Sounds like a win-win situation to us. If you need a video to post, why not use the "Up In the Clouds" clip. We've posted it for you below a stream of the release's first single "Where's the Chocolate," which features Das Racist's Kool AD and comes courtesy of Some Kind of Awesome.

Deez is playing Vancouver's Media Club tonight (January 24). While you might go in expecting an indie rock gig, don't be surprised if you end up waving your hands in the air like you just don't care. You can check out the rest of the tour dates on Deez' website.
