Dan Bejar-Soundtracked Play Unearthed for Toronto Production

Dan Bejar-Soundtracked Play Unearthed for Toronto Production
A few years ago, Destroyer auteur Dan Bejar created a musical play called All Our Happy Days Are Stupid with playwrite/author Sheila Heti. This fall, it will finally be staged. The Jordan Tannahill-directed production will run every night from October 24 to November 3 (except for October 28) at Videofag in Toronto.

Heti wrote the play, while Bejar penned the music. A simple post of Heti's website explains, "The play was never produced, due to a number of confusions and disasters."

She further explained in a 2012 interview with Bomblog, "It had 10 songs in it that were written by Dan Bejar. I sent him the play, and he wrote the songs. When it was clear the play was never going to happen, he put a bunch of them on his album."

UPDATE: Producer Renna Reddie confirms that nearly all of songs have popped up on Destoryer albums (including 2004's Your Blues) and with Bejar's supergroup Swan Lake.

An official synopsis explains, "The play's surreal narrative follows the Oddis and the Sings, two families on vacation in Paris, France. But far from the blissful respite they seek, their holidays become their undoing."

The play has apparently never been attempted "largely on account of its unusual form and massive cast."

Tickets cost $25 for adults or $20 for students and seniors. October 27 will be pay-what-you-can an hour before showtime. The shows starts at 8 p.m., and tickets are available here.

Heti's struggle to write the play was chronicled in her 2010 novel How Should a Person Be?

As previously reported, Destroyer will release the Five Spanish Songs EP on December 2 via Merge.
