Well, here's a match made in robot heaven: Daft Punk have signed on to score Tron 2.0, the sequel to Walt Disney's awesomely cheesy 1982 sci-fi flick. Apparently, the film is set for a 2011 release and both the group's Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo and Thomas Bangalter are currently writing the original music at a new recording studio made especially for the Tron project.
While the Daft Punk camp haven't not issued a statement about their involvement, Billboard has confirmed the robo-helmed duo are indeed working on the project, which is currently being filmed in Vancouver.
According to IMDB, Tron 2.0 is being helmed by director Joseph Kosinski and written by Lost scribes Eddie Kitsis and Adam Horowitz. Actors Olivia Wilde and Garrett Hedlund are set to star, along with original Tron cast member Jeff Bridges.
If Daft Punk are indeed set to score the new Tron film, it would not mark the duo's first venture into the world of cinema. In 2002, Bangalter penned the soundtrack to Gaspar Noé's ultra-disturbing Irréversible and a year later Daft Punk paired up with Japanese animator Kazuhisa Takenouchi to do the Discovery-loaded film Interstella 5555: The 5tory of the 5ecret 5tar 5ystem. More recently, Daft Punk also did their Electroma movie, though that one didn't include any of the duo's original music.
As for the score to the original Tron, electronic music pioneer Wendy Carlos got the credit on that one.
