The Coen brothers' new film, Inside Llewyn Davis, stars musically inclined actor Oscar Isaac in the title role. If things had worked out differently, however, the film could have starred Bright Eyes mastermind Conor Oberst, who has revealed that he tried out for the role.
Oberst — who also co-founded the groups Monsters of Folk and the Mystic Valley Band — spoke with Isaac about Inside Llewyn Davis for Interview Magazine, and he began the conversation by explaining, "I know I told you this when we met, but I tried out for your role in Inside Llewyn Davis — and thank god for everyone that I didn't get it."
Apparently he wasn't the only other musician the Coens auditioned, since Oberst continued, "But they auditioned a lot of musicians and actors for this part, to the point where I heard the Coen brothers and T Bone Burnett say that they had more or less given up on the idea of finding someone. And then you appeared."
Although Oberst didn't get the part, he was among those who played at the Llewyn Davis concert special Another Day/Another Time at New York's Town Hall. The show took place on September 29 and aired on December 13. Other performers included Jack White, Marcus Mumford, Patti Smith, Gillian Welch, Colin Meloy, Joan Baez, the Avett Bothers, the Milk Carton Kids and more.
