As previously reported, Dada Plan collaborator Colin Cowan is set to release Spring Myths today (May 22). This is the third instalment in his seasonal solo album tetralogy and marks an even more solo effort than the previous two. It's primarily the work of Cowan himself as recorded by Malcolm Biddle on 8-track tape with no computer assistance, the most direct conduit into his artistic creativity yet as channelled into weird psych-pop forms. In celebration of its release, Exclaim! is pleased to premiere the video for "Where What Loves Me."
Produced by Matt Krysko, the video is basically Cowan performing awash in fuzzed out VHS feedback, green trails flowing behind his doubled red and blue image mirrored horizontally. Yet, there is cheekiness in its apparent simplicity.
As it begins, we see Cowan's hands creep onto the screen to match a rising synth line. He almost kisses himself as he says "and I love her," and he sings "I'll be dancing" as his feet appear kicking madly. He is clearly having fun, but as the listener hears with warm bass, acoustic guitar, and lysergic synth bloops reach its crescendo with cascading choir vocals and uplifting cello, all awash with record static, his songwriting brilliance is undeniable.
