Coheed and Cambria Announce Two-Volume Concept Album 'The Afterman'

BY Gregory AdamsPublished Jul 31, 2012

Prog-leaning rock troupe Coheed and Cambria are currently out on the road with Iron Maiden, and chances are good that their current set list may be peppered with a few new tunes from an upcoming two-part concept album dubbed The Afterman.

The group announced that the two-album arc will be spread out, with the first, The Afterman: Ascension, arriving October 9 via Hundred Handed/Everything Evil. The second as-yet-untitled LP will land sometime next February.

A press release explains that the self-financed project was recorded in Woodstock, NY and co-produced between the band and previous collaborators Michael Birnbaum and Chris Bittner, who had worked the boards on the group's first three LPs.

While a trailer (see below) for The Afterman suggests at the very least that the song cycle involves an astronaut and a sentient spaceship he refers to as "mother," guitarist/vocalist Claudio Sanchez stated in a press release that the upcoming double-LP is "the most honest record I've ever written."

"Though all the songs can be interpreted through our main character in the story, they were initially written in a very spontaneous manner," he said. "In the past, I've always had a predetermined idea of what the story was going to be when I approached the songs. With The Afterman being a new story within [comic book The Amory Wars story] arc, I allowed the events of my life to drive the concept, and therefore opened up the songwriting to a fuller degree."

Tracklistings for the set have yet to arrive for either volume. You can, however, check out Coheed and Cambria's current tour schedule, including a solo stop at Toronto's Mod Club on September 20, down below.
