In 1999, Wim Wenders received an Oscar nomination for his film Buena Vista Social Club, which followed the Cuban band of the same name. Now, a sequel has been announced for release in 2016.
The film is called Buena Vista Social Club Adios, and will be directed by Lucy Walker (Waste Land). It's being produced by Christine Cowin and Zak Kilberg for Broad Green Pictures, and will follow the band on their final world tour, which finishes with a series of shows in Havana.
Walker opened up about the film in a press release, saying, "The original Buena Vista Social Club movie introduced the world to a group of fantastically charming and talented musicians who have inspired the world with their stories, hearts and music. Those are big shoes to fill and I am honored to follow in the footsteps of such a beloved, popular movie about such beloved, popular artists, and it's especially fascinating during this important moment in Cuban history."
Broad Green's chief creative officer Daniel Hammond added, "Buena Vista Social Club was such a culturally moving film that evoked such a passionate response from audiences and critics worldwide. We are honored to be part of continuing this beautiful story alongside a filmmaker we admire."
Principal photography for the film will begin this summer, and the expectation is that the film will receive a 2016 release date.
