Bryce Jardine

'Lean Years' (EP stream)

BY Sarah MurphyPublished Aug 24, 2015

Toronto singer-songwriter Bryce Jardine recently revealed plans for his upcoming EP Lean Years, and with its release date quickly approaching, Exclaim! is giving you an early opportunity to hear the record in its entirety.

The new six-song set hears Jardine waxing poetic on what it's like to be "young, struggling, broke, in love, while hanging on to hope-filled dreams." With a voice that's more mature but still emotional and raw, he delivers sentimental lyrics over rootsy, melancholic music that's both "muscular" and "stark."

"Room with a View" takes inspiration from the paintings of Chagall, flowing fluidly and creating the feeling of flying above an urban cityscape, while "The Hours" hears Jardine at his most romantic. There's even a reworked lullaby for the younger crowd, with "No Matter Where You Are" grappling with the tough subject of death and broaching the concept to youngsters.

You can hear these amidst the complete six-track collection at the bottom of the page. Lean Years arrives on August 28, and you can also see Jardine's upcoming tour dates listed below.
