Brian Wilson Working with Jeff Beck, Al Jardine, David Marks on New Solo Album

BY Gregory AdamsPublished Jun 6, 2013

Whether or not Brian Wilson was actually booted out of the Beach Boys remains to be seen, but the pop icon isn't resting on his laurels waiting to find out, as he's prepping a new solo LP with guitar god Jeff Beck and fellow Beach Boys Al Jardine and David Marks.

Wilson confirmed the as-yet-untitled studio album follow-up to 2008's That Luck Old Sun in a press release. As for Beck's participation, Wilson noted that he brought the guitarist on board after recalling Beck's performance of "Surf's Up" at the MusiCares Person of the Year event in 2005.

"I knew I had to find a way to work with him," Wilson said, adding, "He absolutely blew my mind and we've been friends ever since. Jeff's incredible guitar playing is exactly what I want for my new album and I'm also looking forward to performing live with him soon."

As for the song cycle, Wilson was apparently inspired by the positive response to last year's Beach Boys tour behind That's Why God Made the Radio.

"It charged me up and my head was full of music — I just couldn't wait to get back into the studio to let it out," he said.

Recording sessions are underway at Wilson's Ocean Way Studios, with production duties being handled by longtime collaborator Joe Thomas. In addition to Beck, Jardine and Marks, other musicians featured on the set include Don Was and Jim Keltner; Wilson's touring partners Jeffrey Foskett, Scott Bennett, Paul Mertens, Darian Sahanaja, and Probyn Gregory; and Beck's rhythm section of Vinnie Colaiuta and Tal Wilkenfeld.

A due date has yet to be revealed, but the album will be issued by Capitol.
