Psych Rock phenom Anton Newcombe and his Brian Jonestown Massacre return with Revelation, their 14th album release since 1993. The band is hailed for having the keen ability to switch styles while keeping sonically consistent with their own, but each album has carried individuality; this time, it's an emphasis on the use of synths, while remaining faithful to psych-rock and shoegaze conventions. The album flits between synth-heavy and true-blue psych rock throughout.
Revelation features original member Ricky Maymi on guitar. A smattering of special guest appearances (Jachim Alhund of Les Big Byrd and Constantine Karlis of Dimmer on drums, among others) make up what Newcombe doesn't take on himself.
"Van Hande Med Dem?" kicks it off with horns, percussion, Newcombe's echoing background vocals and a driving rhythm. "Food for Clouds" and "Memory Camp" are guitar-focused and rooted in shoegaze, akin to BJM circa 1995's Methodrone. "Memorymix" and "Fist Full of Bees" stand out as laid back numbers, while standout track "What You Isn't" fills the senses with jangly percussion, catchy riffs and a more prominent place for Newcombe's vocals. Revelation is made to age well; one listen won't reveal the infinite layers of craftsmanship beneath.
