Soul favourite Bobby Womack is setting his sights on releasing new material and has hinted at a pile of high-profile collaborations for the full-length follow-up to his The Bravest Man in the Universe.
An interview with Okayplayer had the 69-year-old singer confirming that production has already begun on his next LP. So far, it looks as if Womack has a stacked cast of collaborators onboard for the record, but it's unclear if XL head honcho Richard Russell and Blur's Damon Albarn will take as big a role as they did on 2012's The Bravest Man in the Universe.
"I told Damon and Richard that whenever they're available to record I will make myself available," Womack said. "But I was already working on a new album, I have Stevie Wonder on it, I have Rod Stewart, Levert, Snoop Dogg is on it, this lady from Motown — now what was her name? Well, I have a lot of songs where you hear Stevie Wonder singing the song and you hear me on the same song, so you really get the style, because I think that's important. You don't get that style anymore."
An estimated arrival time was not given for the as-yet-untitled project, but it's possible fans will get to hear Womack even sooner via a track he helped Rick Ross out with. It's unclear at present if the song shall appear on the rapper's delayed Mastermind release.
"I'm trying to catch up with Rick Ross to hear what we recorded," Womack said of the unspecified cut. "It was great because with his tracks, it wasn't even like trying something new, he really brought something close to some of my old records and… I was at home with it, I would say, when we went in the studio together."
Judging by the interview, Womack is either suggesting that Ross has sampled an old song of his, or at least has tapped into the same musical spirit with this new number.
"He reached back to something he felt from my records and it was great. I was very surprised with that because it's embarrassing sometimes, you know, when I have to ask my son [whispers]: 'Who's Rick Ross?' — and he's like, Daddy he's one of the hottest rappers out here — not 'one of the,' the hottest rapper out here! And I say: Okay, I didn't know."
