Bobby Long

'Ode to Thinking' (album stream)

BY Sarah MurphyPublished Jul 31, 2015

UK-born, New York-based singer-songwriter Bobby Long is set to release his latest album Ode to Thinking next week, but Exclaim! is giving you the chance to hear the whole thing before it hits shelves.

The album's title is a fair representation of Long's introspective, pensive songwriting style, and on the new record that style gets matched with a sophisticated simplicity that lets Long's stories shine through. Primarily driven by soft melodic guitars and Long's rustic but emotive voice, the songs never veer into the realm of over-the-top.

The 11 songs on the new record have been with Long on the road for a while now, allowing the singer to hone each one in a live setting before laying them down in a studio. The set was recorded in the fall of 2014 at Congress House Studios in Austin, TX, with producer Mark Hallman (Carole King, Ani DiFranco).

You can hear the energy of a live performer on tracks like the rock-tinged, stomp-along number "I'm Not Going Out Tonight," while songs like "Kill Someone" and "Something Blue Something Borrowed" show off a bluesier, darker side to the musician. Ranging from alt-country to gentler folk sounds, the album is a solid collection of songwriting that is sure to strike a chord with listeners.

Ode to Thinking is out on August 7 via Compass Records, but you can give it an early listen in the player below right now.
