Blackalicious Announce New Single, Reveal 'Melodica' EP Reissue

BY Gregory AdamsPublished Jul 17, 2012

Following news this past spring that Gift of Gab was recovering from kidney failure, the West Coast rapper also revealed that his long-dormant duo Blackalicious were prepping their first material since 2005's The Craft. It's unclear just how much music the outfit have prepped thus far, but they'll reveal a new single called "Blacka" by July 31.

A press release confirms that the track will arrive by month's end, and that the cut is "the first song in a wave of long-anticipated new music" from Blackalicious. It's too soon to speculate, but whether the troupe deliver a series of singles or a full LP, this is exciting news for fans of the beloved band.

While the act are getting ready to rep some new material, it turns out they will also be promoting their back catalogue. Blackalicious will deliver a digital re-release of their 1994 EP Melodica on July 31 as well via Black Mines.

The digital package features bonus cut "Changes," which was produced by the group's Chief Excel, DJ Shadow and UNKLE's James Lavelle. While the song was previously delivered on a Japanese version of Melodica, this will be the first time the track is up for sale domestically. You can check out the smooth jazz-sampling song down below.

In other Gift of Gab news, the MC has delivered a new video clip for "Protocol," off his recent The Next Logical Progression LP, which you can also find at the bottom of the page.
