"Abysmal" isn't a word most artists would want associated with their music, but clearly the Black Dahlia Murder aren't most artists. The Michigan melodic death metal band's seventh album is called — you guessed it — Abysmal, and it will be out September 18 through Metal Blade.
In a statement, vocalist Trevor Strnad described Abysmal as another step down the path that the Black Dahlia Murder went down with 2011's Ritual. And while the album is true to the group's past work, it also "has bigger, more dynamic and developed songs. It sees the band in a darker, faster and more melancholic place than anything we've done to date. It is an album wrought emotion on a scale that we haven't reached with our previous attempts."
The new songs apparently touch on everything from despair to triumph and reach "maniacal speeds unseen before in the TBDM catalog." We'll be getting a taste of this on June 24, which is when the outfit will launch pre-orders and share Abysmal's opening track. That's the cover art above.
The Black Dahlia Murder have tours of Australia and Europe planned for the summer. There aren't any North American shows just yet, however. See the tour schedule below.
Abysmal will be the follow-up to 2013's Everblack. In 2014, they released the Black Friday covers 7-inch Grind 'Em All.
