Behemoth

With their latest release, Polish blackened death metal outfit Behemoth have managed to redeem themselves after their lacklustre previous effort, 2007's The Apostasy. Evangelion is the band's ninth release and it picks up where their breakthrough album, 2004's Demigod, left off. Evangelion contains that same flavour as Demigod, which catapulted the band to the forefront of extreme metal, but also displays progression and musicianship honed over the last few years. Although Behemoth have been heading in a much more death metal direction recently, the black metal elements they've retained shine through via Nergal's ominous layered vocals, as well as his and Seth's intimidating guitar work. The album also sees Nergal's songwriting evolving a step further, containing much more intelligent lyrical content. With the true evilness of black metal at its core, Inferno's signature drum work, impressive songwriting and excellent production, Evangelion is as monstrous as the band name suggests.
