For over a year, Beck has rolled out a string of cover albums with his Record Club project, doing full-length interpretations of LPs by the Velvet Underground, Leonard Cohen, Skip Spence, INXS and Yanni. Now, the eclectic songwriter is finally looking to turn the project into a physical album, and he's letting his fans pick the tracklist.
If you go to Beckvoting.com and register, you'll be able to chose your favourite ten of the 56 songs he's released for the project, including the alternate version of the Velvet Underground's "Heroin." The voting page has embedded clips of every track.
It's not entirely clear when the album will be out or in which formats, but the logo on the main page is a record (see above), so we're guessing it will be available on vinyl.
If you need a refresher on what the Record Club is, the concept: Beck and a group of collaborators convene in a studio without any previous preparation. They then pick a classic album and cover every song within the day. Among the artists who have appeared on Record Club releases are Feist, Devendra Banhart, Thurston Moore, Wilco, MGMT, Tortoise, St. Vincent and Nigel Godrich.
We will have to see whether this physical release means that the Record Club project is over or if it's simply a look back before Beck rolls out another series.
