Beck

Odelay Deluxe Edition

BY Cam LindsayPublished Jan 29, 2008

Missing its ten-year anniversary by a couple years, Beck’s 1996 classic Odelay gets its rightful deluxe edition in a more than satisfying two-disc set. Still holding up its adorable creative edge and the groundbreaking impact that made him more than just a "Loser,” Odelay is complemented with the addition of three extra tracks, including A Life Less Ordinary’s sluggish "Deadweight” and two unreleased cuts: schizophrenic thrasher "Inferno” and "Gold Chains,” a honky hip-hop joint. It’s disc two that delivers sensory overload, however. It begins with three remixes, including two takes on "Devil’s Haircut”: Aphex Twin’s happy hardcore blitz and Mickey P.’s most awesome "American Wasteland” punk makeover. From there, it’s a cavalcade of b-sides that coalesce to make one great Beck full-length. One of Beck’s best tracks ever, the motoric "Electric Music and the Summer People,” shines bright, as does "Feather In Your Cap,” a frank acoustic number that sounds like a treated outtake from One Foot In the Grave. From now on, this is the only way to listen to Odelay.
