Fans of British music, take note — this fall, BBC Four is telling The Story of Indie with a new three-part documentary series.
The series will chronicle the grassroots start of British indie music that eventually led to its massive indie success. It'll cover the rise of labels like Factory, Zoo, Postcard, Rough Trade and Mute, as well as the wildly successful careers of bands like Oasis and Blur.
There are many musicians joining the project for talking head interviews. So far, we know that it will feature interviews with Cabaret Voltaire's Richard Kirk, Cocteau Twins' Simon Raymonde, the KLF's Bill Drummond, New Order's Stephen Morris and Gillian Gilbert and Throbbing Gristle's Genesis P-Orridge, Chris Carter and Cosey Fanni Tutti.
The show will be hosted by BBC 6 Music's Mark Radcliffe. He shared the following statement on the series:
This is really a story that's been waiting to be told. We're always hearing about the seismic shifts the music business is undergoing, but in many ways, this was the first — when the egalitarian independent spirit of punk and DIY broke the stranglehold of the men in suits in the posh offices of the major labels in that there London creating the soundtrack of our lives along the way.
